Choosing a Paintball Mask
09/06/10
One of the most important pieces of equipment you’ll use for paintball is your mask. Sure, your gun can make you a better shot, but without a mask, you won’t be allowed to play the game. In fact, all paintball courses have boundary lines into which you cannot go without at least protection for your eyes. This is because today’s paintball guns throw paint at high enough speeds to cause serious injury if a ball hits you in the face, especially in the eyes.
There are tons of different types of paintball masks, and the most important choice you’ll make is the style of mask you wear. Some people prefer simple goggles and may cover their faces with breathable cloth. Most players, though, seem to prefer full-face masks that strap on around the head. These masks come with holes in the bottom for breathing.
When you choose the style of mask you want to wear, remember that they aren’t all shaped alike. Even if you’re going to buy a mask online, you may want to run into a sporting goods store near your home to try on a few masks. That way, you can see what’s most comfortable for you before buying a mask online.
One thing to think about is whether or not you’ll have a comm kit hooked up inside your mask. During many scenario and team playing games, teams will require that their members stay in communication through a portable comm kit. Normally, these kits fit around your ear and have a microphone that rests near your mouth. It can be a good idea to test out how your comm kit works with your particular mask before buying one.
Another thing to think about is what color your mask should be. This will depend largely on where you’ll be playing paintball. If you’re playing woodland games, camo paintball masks are your best option. If you’ll be playing indoors or if you don’t care about blending in with your surroundings, then you can just choose a mask in a color that appeals to you.
Choosing a paintball mask isn’t that complicated, but they can be a little pricey, which is why you should put some thought into your choice. The right mask can help you stay safer and more comfortable during your game. It can also look pretty cool if you want to impress your paintball playing friends.
How Do Air Guns Rifles Work
08/06/10
Air gun rifles are rifles that use compressed air or some other gas to fire projectiles. Unlike firearms, they don’t burn the gas but, rather, need the pressure built to propel their shots. In this sense, they are related to airsoft guns and only differ because they fire metallic projectiles instead of plastic ammunition.
Air gun rifles are perhaps the earliest pneumatic technology used. They represent an improvement over the matchlock muskets, because rain does not affect them and, compared to muzzle-loading guns, they can be fired much more rapidly. They are quieter, smokeless and give no muzzle flash.
Air rifles are classified according to the three ways in which they are powered: spring-loaded, pneumatic and by compressed carbon dioxide gas. The first type operates by means of a spring-loaded piston at the back of the barrel, which is drawn back by a cocking lever. Pulling back this lever causes the piston to compress the springs until a small hook at the back is engaged.
When you pull the trigger, the spring decompresses and pushes the piston forward, therefore, rapidly compressing the air behind the pellet. Instantly, the air column behind the pellet expands and grows warm. This expanded air fires the pellet out of the gun barrel. The speed at which the pellet is driven out sometimes exceeds the speed of sound and it is responsible for the loud cracking sound that can be mistaken for that of a firearm.
Gas powered air rifles, on the other hand, hold pressurized nitrogen or air in a special chamber in the piston. The cocking lever further compresses this gas and, when it is released, it drives the pellet out before the expanding gas. Because there are no springs in these models, the recoil with gas-powered air rifles is less than for spring-powered guns.
Pneumatic air rifles also use pressurized air, but here it is pre-compressed air. These guns have an onboard pump that pressurizes the air in the reservoir. They can be multi-stroke (with more than one pump) or single-stroke (pressurized by a single motion of the cocking lever). They fire the pellet with the released expanding column of air and, because they have even fewer moving parts, they provide less recoil than the other two types of air rifles.
Therefore, all air guns rifles ultimately depend on rapidly expanding air to fire their pellets. What differentiates them is how they do this.
